Abstract

Among the various sociological examinations of digitalization processes there already is a field called digital sociology. Deborah Lupton’s introduction to Digital Sociology, for example, offers a concept for a cross-cutting digital sociology. From her point of view, such a cross-cutting sociology is to be located around the digital. This focus might increase our general knowledge of digital devices and their usage, but it is often restricted to specific theoretical and empirical insights about digital phenomena. For that reason, studying digital devices within various sociological subfields seems to be more fruitful. More importantly, a sociology of the digital is linked to computer sciences. This connection enables such a sociology to examine inner logics of digital devices, providing a base for sociological relevant knowledge, and improving suitable digital procedures as well as tools for empirical research.
