As part of the joint project Educational Myths in the GDR, we are conducting a secondary analysis of qualitative interviews that were collected in different research contexts and at different points in time. These include two oral history studies (Niethammer et al. 1990; v. Plato 1992) and a sociological study in the context of biographical research (Beetz et al. 2014).
The secondary analysis of data collected at different points in time enables us to reconstruct narratives in relation to contemporary discourses. Taken together, the data allow us to historicise the narrative analyses across multiple temporal perspectives. Nevertheless, the data material also presents difficulties. The material pool consists of different types of qualitative interviews, ranging from biographical-narrative variants to “oral history”. The communicative context must be taken into account in the analysis in order not to miss the meaning of the narratives. In our presentation, we would like to present and discuss the opportunities and challenges of secondary analyses based on our experiences.
