The paper first examines the relationship between crisis and transition, based on Koselleck’s conceptual history of the term of crisis. A typology of crises is then proposed along three dimensions: spatial, temporal, and social. Focusing on big political crises and what Bourdieu defines as “critical moments”, the following three sections develop conceptual tools to study the symbolic struggles that intensify in times of crisis around the diagnosis of its causes, especially the notion of prophecies and the concept of axiological operators.
