Checklist for authors (stylistic guidelines)

  • Use of the new German orthography
  • Use of gender-neutral language
  • Body text font: Open Sans 9.5
  • Number count: The article should not exceed 35,000 characters (including spaces and bibliography)
  • Use periods for numbers, e.g., 1,000, 2,500, etc.
  • Spell out numbers up to twelve
  • Add first names when mentioned for the first time in the text, with a comment if necessary
  • Spell out city names: Frankfurt am Main, Halle an der Saale, not Frankfurt a.M.
  • Quotations of five or more lines should be placed in a separate paragraph
  • […] for omissions in the quotation, i.e., square Use parentheses and Alt+0133 for periods
  • Book titles or conference titles, foreign words, or other emphasis should be italicized, not bold or underlined
  • Do not use periods as punctuation in headings. Do not number headings.
  • When using "to" or "introductions" – a long dash should be used (Alt+0150).
  • An apostrophe looks like this: ’ and can be created with Alt+0146.
  • Footnotes should only be used for content comments, not for bibliographic information (except URLs).
  • References in the text should include the author's name, the year of publication, and, if applicable, the page number, e.g., (König 1995, p. 17).
    • For two authors, both names should be listed and connected with "and," e.g., (Münkler and Fischer 2002, p. 10). For three or more authors, after the first name, add et al.
    • When citing the same source repeatedly, repeat the reference, do not use abbreviations such as "loc. cit." or "ibid."
    • Separate multiple consecutive references with a semicolon: (König 1962, p. 64; Berger and Luckmann 1974, p. 137)
    • Provide online sources with the URL and date accessed in a footnote: (Jarausch, Discussion, January 22, 2013, www.uni-leipzig.de/artikel/diskussion)
    • References at the end of the manuscript: All cited titles are listed alphabetically by author's name and, for each author, by year of publication (ascending). Please format the reference list according to the citation style of the Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie:
      • Books: Luhmann, Niklas. 1984. Soziale Systeme. Grundriss einer allgemeine Theorie. Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp.
      • Journal articles: Kreyenfeld, Michaela, and Esther Geisler. 2006. Mothers' employment in East and West Germany. Journal of Family Research 18:333–360.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The text follows the stylistic and bibliographical guidelines in Guidelines for Authors , which can be found under "Submissions".
  • The citation style of the Cologne Journal of Sociology and Social Psychology was applied (EndNote and Citavi can be set this way). The references are attached to the submitted document.
  • The document template for Microsoft Word can be downloaded here. After downloading, you can either write your article directly into the template (and save it as a Word document under a new name) or transfer the template to your existing text.
  • The article was written in Microsoft Word and is available as a .docx file (or .doc file) or the article was written in another program (e.g. Open Office, Libre) and is available as an rtf file.
  • The paper was presented at an event of the 42st Congress of the German Sociological Association in Duisburg. A parallel publication does not exclude a publication in the proceedings volume, but possible copyright conflicts must be able to be excluded.
