The energy transition in urban areas requires not only technical innovations, but also consideration of social and cultural aspects. Energy commons and commoning open up new perspectives for equitable and inclusive energy systems by focusing on collectively managed resources and collective practices. Using the example of energy communities in the Ruhr region, my research examines how commoning practices are used to shape sustainable and participatory energy futures, employing practice-theoretical and relational approaches as well as participatory methods. The results contribute to a better understanding of the transformative potential of energy commoning for a democratic and solidarity-based urban energy transition.
