The terms “turbulent times” and “turbulent situations” have long been part of everyday language. What is sufficient in everyday life as a description of a specific situation is still underdefined from a sociological perspective. It is therefore worth investigating whether turbulence is a social situation sui generis, whether it has characteristics that are not yet covered by established terms such as anomie, crisis, catastrophe, and other sociological concepts of order.
Turbulence as a basic sociological concept in spe is not a concept of order. It can be regarded as a concept of orientation.
By drawing on W. Stegmaier's “philosophy of orientation” and B. Waldenfels' phenomenology of threshold experiences, the connections between orientation, self-reference to the world, turbulent situations, and the possibilities for gaining experience in such situations are clarified.
