Social Work - Social-Justice Profession or Superstructure?

The contribution critically examines the self-concept of social work as a “profession of justice,” a notion primarily promoted within academic circles and in professional associations. This self-concept not only overburdens professional practice, since the profession lacks both the material and the theoretical resources to credibly realize such a claim. It also poses the question, why such a concept is needed at all. In order to explain why the issue of justice remains salient for the profession, the contribution proposes a reformulated theory of social work as a superstructure which, avoiding the economism and determinism of neo-Marxist critiques of social work, conceptualizes the functionality of social work in relation to everyday life understood—following Ágnes Heller—as the “base.” Beyond philosophical theories of justice, it is suggested, the recurring thematization of social-structural causes can be understood as emerging from the professional frustration inherent in this positionality.
