Am Ende der europäischen Kolonialreiche
Zum Aufstieg des Nationalstaats im soziologischen Imaginären

Mit dem sich abzeichnenden Ende der europäischen Kolonialreiche nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entstand der verbreitete Eindruck, dass man an der Schwelle zu einer neuen Epoche stehe. In ihr, so die Hoffnung, werde sich der Nationalstaat global durchsetzen. Die Sozialwissenschaften blieben davon nicht unberührt. Auch sie beteiligten sich an der politischen und intellektuellen Neuordnung der Welt im Zeichen universaler Dekolonisation. Insbesondere prägten sie ein Epochenbild, dem zufolge die politische Ordnung der Moderne auf den Nationalstaat zuläuft. Dieses bis heute wirkmächtige Bild verkennt jedoch die Kontingenz nationalstaatlicher Ordnung, gerade auch im Prozess der Dekolonisation, und verstellt den Blick auf die historische Genese des Nationalstaats. Denn der Nationalstaat hat sich keineswegs nur in Opposition zu imperialen Ordnungsstrukturen herausgebildet, sondern wurde durch diese ebenfalls ermöglicht und in seiner Entwicklung gefördert.
