Abstract

The paper examines why and how right-wing populist movements strategically target organizations in order to roll back societal pluralism. The point of departure is a call for a “march through organizations” articulated by the German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which frames organizations as central sites of decision-making and power in contemporary societies. Drawing on social movement and organizational sociology, we identify three ideal-typical strategies of right-wing populist influence: coordinated attacks on existing organizations, the founding of movement organizations, and the strategic occupation of positions within established organizations. Using empirically condensed case studies from the United States, these strategies are reconstructed and situated within a social movement and organizational sociology framework. In conclusion, we discuss their visibility in Germany as well as the limits and pitfalls of right-wing populist influence, arguing that while a “march through organizations” may appear strategically attractive, organizational transformations are neither linear nor durably enforceable through political mobilization.
