Abstract

The author analyses the status of sociology from the personal perspective of more than fifty years researching and teaching in the field. He observes the relative decline of the discipline in three dimensions: theory, empirical studies, and professional employment. He detects a shift from objectivity to advocacy, a development that makes it vulnerable to political attacks – mostly from right-wing politicians and movements in the US and beyond.
