Soziologie in kriegerischen Zeiten

Woher kommt und wohin führt die Entwertung qualitativer Sozialforschung und theoretischer Pluralität? Eine Spurensuche als Kommentar

Abstract

Anknüpfend an bisherige Debatte in diese Zeitschrift rekonstruiert der Beitrag unter Bezug auf eine soziologiegeschichtliche Studie von Anne Rawls die Entstehung und Persistenz eines pejorativen Narrativs über qualitative Sozialforschung und das begleitende Theoriearsenal. Insbesondere wird herausgearbeitet, wie in zentralen Statements von Protagonist*innen der Akademie-Gründung dieses aus den USA des zweiten Weltkriegs stammende Narrativ bedient und damit fortgeschrieben wird. Der Autor betont dagegen, dass für einen fruchtbaren Diskurs im Fach die wechselseitige Anerkennung der Dignität der opponierenden Sprecher*innenposition unabdingbar ist.

The paper picks up on recent discussions in this journal about the role of methods and theory in sociology, the various divides between quantitative and qualitative research, and the dispute over unified science vs. multi-perspectivity in theory and methods. Relying on a study by Anne Rawls the argument is especially focusing on the parallels between a pejorative narrative about qualitative methods and interactionist theory from the times of WW II and the rhetoric recently used in arguing for the split-off of a so-called Akademie für Soziologie. The obvious is suggested: A fruitful debate requires all participants to respectfully acknowledge the scientific and personal dignity of their opponents.
