Paul F. Lazarsfeld (1901–1976) lebte die ersten dreißig Jahre seines Lebens in Wien und wurde dort vor allem von austromarxistischen Sozialdemokraten wie Friedrich Adler, Otto Bauer und Rudolf Hilferding, der Individualpsychologie Alfred Adlers und der akademischen Psychologie Karl und Charlotte Bühlers geprägt. Markantestes Beispiel seiner Wiener Periode ist »Die Arbeitslosen von Marienthal«. 1933 ging er mit einem Stipendium der Rockefeller Foundation nach New York und blieb ab 1935 in den USA, wo er sich nach kurzer Zeit als managerial scholar etablieren konnte. Gründungen von Forschungsinstituten und viel beachtete Studien zur Konsumenten der Massenmedien, Arbeitslosigkeit, Familie und vor allem zu Entscheidungsprozessen von Wählern und Konsumenten machten in berühmt. Seine Art empirische Sozialforschung – ein Ausdruck, den er prägte –, seine, gemeinsam mit Robert K. Merton an der Columbia University betriebene Nachwuchsförderung und Lehrbücher zur Methodologie trugen dazu bei, dass er in den 1970er Jahren zur Ultra-Elite der Soziologie gehörte.
Paul F. Lazarsfeld (1901–1976) lived the first thirty years of his life in Vienna, where he was influenced primarily by Austro-Marxists such as Friedrich Adler, Otto Bauer, and Rudolf Hilferding, the individual psychology of Alfred Adler, and the academic psychology of Karl and Charlotte Bühler. The most striking example of his Viennese period is »Die Arbeitslosen von Marienthal«. In 1933 he went to New York on a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship and remained in the U.S. from 1935, where he was able to establish himself as a managerial scholar after a short time. He became famous for founding research institutes and conducting highly regarded studies on mass media audiences, unemployment, the family and, above all, the decision-making processes of voters and consumers. His type of empirical social research – a term he coined – his promotion of young researchers, together with Robert K. Merton at Columbia University, and textbooks on methodology contributed to his being among the ultra-elite of sociology in the 1970s.
