Eine wissenssoziologische Ortsbestimmung

Abstract

Zeitdiagnosen haben innerhalb der Soziologie einen ambivalenten Status. Auf der einen Seite sind sie das Genre, mit dem das Fach gesellschaftlich sichtbar wird. Auf der anderen Seite gelten sie trotz ihres hohen Anregungspotentials innerhalb des Faches als wissenschaftlich grenzwertig. Im Beitrag wird argumentiert, dass die fachliche Kritik genau diejenigen Merkmale des Genres betrifft, die im Hinblick auf die Erzeugung außerdisziplinärer Aufmerksamkeit notwendig sind. Zeitdiagnosen lassen sich davon ausgehend als hybride soziologische Wissensform im Schnittfeld fachinterner und fachexterner Aufmerksamkeitsökonomien fassen, für deren Produktion die Orientierung am Dualismus von zwei Logiken konstitutiv ist.  

The status of diagnoses of our time within sociology is an ambivalent one. On the one hand, such diagnoses are the genre by which the discipline gets societal visibility. On the other hand, despite of their potential to stimulate further research, diagnoses of our time are classified as marginally acceptable. The article argues that the internal criticism focusses on just those characteristics of the genre which are necessary for attaining attention outside of the discipline. Therefore, diagnoses of our time can be defined as a hybrid form of sociological knowledge placed at the intersection of an internal and an external economy of attention. Hence, a dualism of two logics is constitutive for the production of this hybrid form of sociological knowledge.
